Big Dry

Posts have been few and far between these last couple of years for a reason. There hasn’t been alot of good news to blog. Over the years, I’ve seen many droughts but none as harsh or as drawn out as the current hat-trick “big dry”.
Around 75% of the farms are in fallow this year. Some of this country still has moisture at depth left over from 2012 – chickpeas that never used their moisture profile. There is a dry band from 30-50cms in the soil, so all the talk is about the weather. Can we score 100mm over the next few months and fill the profile for a possible summer crop? Stay tuned – We shall see.
Pictures below are fields on Morvenvale in fallow with various degrees of ground cover from chickpea, fababean and wheat stubbles.
