The big dry rolls on, with no rain recorded in September. Yields are well down, but no sense in dwelling on what might have been. In theory, a crop can’t be grown on 30mm rain since planting, but good starting moisture and the amazing water holding capacity of our soils has carried the wheat and chickpeas home.
Long fallow chickpeas off cotton in 2016 shine out as our best crop this season. Harvest will start in the next few weeks – will be interesting to see how these drought crops go. More to follow…
