18mm of rain last week has helped the chickpeas. But its all too late for the fababeans. They are turning black very quickly as we will start harvesting within the week. Its been a very hard growing season starting with about 60cms soil moisture combined with no decent “incrop” rain. Also frost damage and very hot drying conditions have added to more pressure to the moisture stressed crops. There is no doubt the chickpea is a hardy plant well suited to drought conditions. More to follow as harvest hits…
Agree Chickpeas is a hardy plant, not so good to harvest I have been told. Hope you get some tropical moisture this coming Cyclone season to putt moisture back into the bank.
Thanks Floyd, now that harvest is done, we will take whatever rainfall mother nature throws our way and hope to start next season with a good profile.
Cheers, David
